Ruffs

Grenesleves and gallant ruffs,
Brodred caules and golden cuffs

made by Noel Gielegham

There is no mention of ruffs in the 1584 ballad of Greensleeves, but a fragment of song in the manuscript of William Cobbold's 'New Fashions' (dating from a few years later) includes the lines: "Grenesleves and gallant ruffs, Brodred caules and golden cuffs,"

We decided that this is enough justification for Greensleeves to have a ruff and cuffs to complete her outfit. These were made by Noel Gielegham. They are embellished with golden spangles and some rather spectacular lace sourced by Rachel Jardine.
